An exclusive evening of drone and ambient with Syndrome, Treha Sektori and Le Seul Elément on 21/sept 2013 at 019, Gent.
Artist in residence is Max Kuiper who will make an art exhibition around the theme Metanoia, as well as a special publication of his handmade Z\w\a\r\t magazine. This evening was made possible with the support of Consouling Sounds.
SYNDROME (BE)
Syndrome is a project which is fronted by Mathieu Vandekerckhove (Amenra, Kingdom, Sembler Deah, Caan, C-O-R). For years the self-taught musician learned and studied his craft of songwriting and sound scaping, mainly as a means to self exploration, meditation and attempts at channelling negative into positive energy, this while staying below the surface at all times. With the epic 28 minute recording of “Now and Forever”, his latest album, released through Consouling Sounds/Hypertension Records Syndrome evokes a meditative state by holding on to a slow rhythm where minimal movement captures the most of that moment. This movement appears in different sound forms that are at first repressed and then fall together as an implosion. The overall vibe is rather bleak and introspective with a dreamy pace. The vocals are brief, mostly in the form of ominous whispers which only serves to enhance the minimalist soundscape. The droning sounds come in darkly woven passages, waves of sound amidst the fluttering voicings of guitar and percussion. Syndrome was recently added as support for the Neurosis show in Belgium.

Trehalose Sektori is the solo project of Dehn Sora from France, founded in 2005. No one knows the man behind the stage name but maybe Sembler Deah does ring a bell. Dehn Sora is one of the band members of Sembler Deah, side project of Amenra members Mathieu Vandekerkchove and Colin H. van Eeckhout.
'Endessiah ", roughly translated as' letting go', is his second album and came out under the Canadian label Cyclic Law. The album features six tracks and moves between dark and sacred, mystical and mesmerizing, drone and ambient. The drones drill deep into the heart and are articulated in minimal melodies that mimic depression of unprecedented nature. Often oppressive and frightening translates Dehn Sora spiritual spheres in sounds. Dehn Sora makes use of guitars, sampled vocals, esraj, mandolin and banjo, in addition to numerous effects. All this creates an almost suffocating heaviness that is broken by some kind of religious hymns. The dark-light contrast is thus mobilized and is a frequently recurring movement through the numbers. 'Endessiah' is the movement of a dark power, something sinister intertwined with the sacred, religious, life-giving. Treha Sektori was recently added as support for the Neurosis show in Germany.

Le Seul Elément is the soloproject of Matthieu Pellerin from France. Piano and drum are the heart of Le Seul Elément surrounded by obscure noise samples. Le Seul Elément creates a shadowplay not only musical but also visual by projecting blistering images on a white cube. Slowly layers and drum samples are woven into the music collapsing to a steamy climax and then fall back to the simplicity of the sound of piano. Endearing and heartbreaking at the same time. Le Seul Elément played two nights as headliner at Dunk! festival 2013 and released a mini CD 'Gin Pleos part 1 and 2'. Matthieu creates music that both gives and takes your breath.

Max Kuiper is a Dutch artist who works with image, sound and text, and will provide an exclusive exhibition during the event, related to the theme "Metanoia". This exhibition will be part of the special issue of his magazine called Z \ W \ A \ R \ T which will be available in a limited edition during the event. Z \ W \ A \ R \ T is a small handmade book that mainly consists of visual and material elements. Each number is different in shape, materials and technology. Their sole ambition is to organize a unique event twice a year combining those two by working around a specific theme. “Metanoia” was chosen as theme for their first event, which means “the process of experiencing a psychotic break down and subsequent, positive psychological re-building or "healing". This psychological movement can also be found in (experimental) art and music, and this special evening will emphasize that movement so it will rather be a total experience than just a show you’re attending. Every event will be unique in it’s own way, every time somehow different but in the heart of experience the same.
