Alter Ego vzw proudly presents ‘Atmosphaera’.

An exclusive evening of drone, doom and ambient postrock with Sum Of R, Hemelbestormer and All We Expected on 21/march 2015 at Gouvernement, Ghent.

Artists in residence are Susu Laroche and Maarten Kinet who will make an art exhibition around the theme Atmosphaera.
This evening was made possible with the support of Consouling Sounds.

Sum Of R
Switzerland's Sum Of R was formed by Reto Mäder (RM74, Ural Umbo) in 2008 as a live band focused on (de)constructing sounds in a mind-puzzling way. Sum Of R creates slow moving episodes of a hypnotic and complex music between post-metal, doom, drone, ambient, experimental and instrumental rock music. Their ritualistic take on expanding sound layers is deepened by the rawness of an unconventional metal atmosphere. Sum Of R's self-titled debut album was released in 2008 on Milwaukee-based independent label Utech Records (Home of Locrian, Aluk Todolo, Horseback, Nadja, James Plotkin, Mamiffer, House of Low Culture). Following 2012 EP "Ride out the Waves" on Italian label Storm As He Walks and contributions on compilations alongside bands like Sonic Youth, Sunn O))), Carla Bozulich, Bonnie Prince Billy and Master Musicians Of Bukakke; Sum Of R's second full-length "Lights on Water" has been released in December 2013 on Utech Records and self-released in February 2014.

Hemelbestormer
Hemelbestormer is Dutch for someone with revolutionary views, an idealist and someone with wild plans. Literally it can be translated as "sky stormer" or "stormer of heaven". ...and so are the five individuals behind this entity. Hemelbestormer is the MMXII omega in a long chain of births and deaths, having its roots in the black metal, sludge and hardcore scene.

All We Expected
Driven by intense emotions and raw energy, All We Expected brings a fierce mix of dark reverby patterns, melodic basslines and pounding drums.
Soothing, yet at the same time evoking a controlled feeling of rage, these youngsters put up a great live show and will leave no one untouched.

Alter Ego vzw is a collective of people who are passionate about experimental music and art. Their sole ambition is to organize a unique event twice a year combining those two by working around a specific theme. “Metanoia” was chosen as theme for our first event, which means “the process of experiencing a psychotic break down and subsequent, positive psychological re-building or "healing". This psychological movement can also be found in (experimental) art and music. “Phenomena” was chosen as theme for our second event. Phenomena are often, but not always, understood as 'appearances' or 'experiences'.. In modern philosophical use, the term 'phenomena' has come to mean what is experienced as given. The term phenomenon refers to any incident deserving of inquiry and investigation, especially events that are particularly unusual or of distinctive importance. In scientific usage, a phenomenon is any event that is observable. “Melancholia” was chosen as theme for our third event. The name "melancholia" comes from the old medical belief of the four humors: disease or ailment being caused by an imbalance in one or other of the four basic bodily liquids, or humors. Personality types were similarly determined by the dominant humor in a particular person. Burton wrote in the 16th century that music and dance were critical in treating mental illness, especially melancholia. A famous allegorical engraving by Albrecht Dürer is entitled Melencolia I. This engraving portrays melancholia as the state of waiting for inspiration to strike, and not necessarily as a depressive affliction. Atmosphaera was chosen as theme for our fourth event. Atmosphere is an immediate form of physical perception, and is recognised through emotional sensibility. Peter Zumthor in his book Atmospheres constitutes architectural atmospheres as "this singular density and mood, this feeling of presence, well-being, harmony, beauty...under whose spell I experience what I otherwise would not experience in precisely this way". Sound is both a tangible and intangible sensational atmospheric quality.
Every event will be unique in it’s own way, every time somehow different but in the heart of experience the same.

ConSouling Sounds is a record label from Belgium. The mail order and the label have taken the mission upon them to promote all ‘Post’ and ‘Doom’ music and to help it find it’s way to the audience. They describe their mission further as follows: ‘These innovating types of music keep holding only a shadowy position in the entire musical landscape. Many interesting bands and unique undertakings never get the chance to develop. They experience difficulties to find their way. Working on distribution or even a reputation is not obvious at all. ConSouling Sounds wants to work with bands that are truly remarkable. Through the label we offer them the chance to step in to the footlights they deserve. Through the ConSouling Sounds mail order we help this music find it’s way to the audience more easily. We continuously update and expand our catalogue to make it into a tasty dish for fans as well as for those new to the scene.’ Consouling Sounds has a webshop but also a brick and mortar store in Ghent, Belgium. In the Store, you’ll be able to buy records and cd’s, with a strong focus on the genres the label is known for. However, the catalogue of the Store extends to other alternative genres, from indie rock to contemporary jazz, with a special interest in Ghent based bands. You can enjoy coffee and tea with a slice of pie, and while you’re there, you can even get some personal advice and guidance if you want to self-release an album and wonder how to start. Or, you can just drop by and hang out while enjoying music all the way.
Visit their website and discover all those great bands they help promoting.
