Alter Ego vzw proudly presents ‘Melancholia’.
An exclusive evening of drone and ambient with Sembler Deah, Nadja and Mongolito on 21/sept 2014 at Monasterium Poortackere, Ghent.
Artist in residence is CHVE who will make an art exhibition around the theme Melancholia.

Sembler Deah
Sembler Deah is Colin H. Van Eeckhout (Amenra, CHVE, Kingdom), Mathieu Vandekerckhove (Amenra, Syndrome, Kingdom) and Dehn Sora (Treha Sektori) raised in 2010. This bold eulogy of dark ambient and industrial noise soundscapes drags each participant, who is more than just a listener, into an ethereal and hypnotic journey of knotted drones and falls. Dark and hypnotic, beauty only rivalled by it’s ominous presence.

Nadja is a duo of Aidan Baker & Leah Buckareff alternately based in Toronto, Canada & Berlin, Germany. Nadja originally began in 2003 as a solo project for Baker to explore the heavier/noisier side of his experimental/ambient guitar-based music. In 2005 Buckareff joined in order to make the project more than just a studio endeavour & allow Nadja to perform live.
Nadja creates music that has been variously described as drone metal, ambient doom, and shoegazer, combining soundscapes, electronics, & atmospheric vocals & tempering the cacophony with an ethereal melodicism such that the listener is enveloped in a sublimating wall of amorphous sound.

Mongolito is guitarist Marc De Backer’s solo project. Lost in darkness, depths of love, hate, red wine and Brussels. Giving a particular and original dimension to his guitar sounds, emerging between loops, variable tempos and drones.

Their sole ambition is to organize a unique event twice a year combining those two by working around a specific theme. “Metanoia” was chosen as theme for our first event, which means “the process of experiencing a psychotic break down and subsequent, positive psychological re-building or "healing". This psychological movement can also be found in (experimental) art and music. “Phenomena” was chosen as theme for our second event. Phenomena are often, but not always, understood as 'appearances' or 'experiences'.. In modern philosophical use, the term 'phenomena' has come to mean what is experienced as given. The term phenomenon refers to any incident deserving of inquiry and investigation, especially events that are particularly unusual or of distinctive importance. In scientific usage, a phenomenon is any event that is observable. “Melancholia” was chosen as theme for our third event. The name "melancholia" comes from the old medical belief of the four humors: disease or ailment being caused by an imbalance in one or other of the four basic bodily liquids, or humors. Personality types were similarly determined by the dominant humor in a particular person. Burton wrote in the 16th century that music and dance were critical in treating mental illness, especially melancholia. A famous allegorical engraving by Albrecht Dürer is entitled Melencolia I. This engraving portrays melancholia as the state of waiting for inspiration to strike, and not necessarily as a depressive affliction. Every event will be unique in it’s own way, every time somehow different but in the heart of experience the same.
